For Rs 10 a Kannauj attar producer can become a registered authorised user of the 'Kannauj Perfume' GI (No. 157) and lawfully sell under the protected name; DPIIT separately funds GI fairs, pavilions and awareness programmes through eligible agencies.

सावधानी

GI registration (2014) protects the name only; individual firms have no enforceable right until registered as authorised users – very few Kannauj units have done so. Traders/retailers outside the defined Kannauj area, or producers using non-traditional (synthetic) processes, cannot become authorised users. Fee tables changed twice (2020, 2025) – secondary sources still cite Rs 500. DPIIT promotion grants flow only to eligible agencies (associations, institutions), not to individual attar makers. The registered proprietor body and its current status could not be verified (Registry page 404). Sources for DPIIT grant quantum are unavailable (403), so no subsidy percentage is asserted.

No district-level implementing office; Form GI-3 is filed with the GI Registry (Chennai) online or by post, with a copy to the registered proprietor of "Kannauj Perfume". Local facilitation in Kannauj is informal: the registered proprietor association of the Kannauj Perfume GI (name not verified from the Registry page, which returned 404), FFDC Kannauj (MSME autonomous body) and DIC Kannauj under ODOP. DPIIT GI-promotion grants go to eligible agencies/organisations, not to individual producers.
